Port Washington, New York (PRWEB) January 08, 2012

What began as a difficult year in the consumer electronics business ended the same way, according to leading market research company The NPD Group?s Weekly Tracking Service*. Total consumer technology sales (excluding cell phones, tablets, e-readers, and video games) fell 5.9 percent to around $ 9.5 billion for the 5 weeks ending December 24**, a slight improvement over the 6.2 percent decline in 2010.

Despite the gloom over the PC and TV marketplaces, sales for those two core categories dipped just 4 percent in dollars over 2010, and unit volumes were essentially flat on a year-over-year basis.

?2010 was the first year in quite awhile where the real drags on the core CE marketplace were not TVs and PCs,? said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. ?Revenue for those two segments outperformed while the rest of the market dropped by more than 7 percent. The accelerated rate of decline in older technology categories such as DVD, GPS and MP3 players put a ceiling on how well the industry could perform during the holiday.?

Desktop PCs posted a 2 percent unit volume increase but it wasn?t enough to offset the 5 percent decline in notebook sales which brought overall PC sales down 4 percent. ASPs jumped $ 9 year-over-year to $ 575 continuing last year?s trend of increasing holiday pricing levels. Windows-based all-in-one (AIO) PCs increased 135 percent and accounted for almost 20 percent of all Windows desktop unit sales volume.

Big screen TVs gave a big boost to the flat-panel TV market, thanks to unit sales of TVs with screen sizes 50 inches and higher increasing by 32 percent. Approximately one-in-six flat-panel TVs sold were above 50 inches and the share of flat-panel TVs greater than 60 inches more than tripled. Meanwhile 32 inch TVs, the market?s largest single size segment, saw revenue drop almost 9 percent and average prices fall below $ 300, to $ 277. 3D TVs, the industry?s most maligned segment, saw unit volumes soar by more than 100 percent and TVs with 3D capability accounted for more than one in every five dollars spent on TVs during the holiday.

Under the TV devices was another bright spot for the industry. Sales revenue for home theater systems increased 10 percent, receiver revenue increased by 3.5 percent and stand-alone streaming devices saw a 65 percent increase in revenue while stand-alone speaker systems for portable devices saw revenue increase almost 10 percent.

?It was truly a mixed bag this year,? said Baker. ?Many newer technologies posted strong gains, although most of those products, such as streaming devices, still generate volumes too small to impact the overall market trend. These newer technologies are likely to be the ones to watch in 2012 as the industry continues to search for high growth opportunities to replace aging product segments.?

*NPD?s weekly POS information is derived from a subset panel of retailers that also contribute to NPD?s projected monthly POS panel.

**Holiday sales include sales from November 20 ? December 24, 2011

Port Washington, NY (PRWEB) January 11, 2012

According to the results of a new study released by The NPD Group, Inc., a leading market research company, women were more frugal and more thrifty then men in their spending for holiday gifts this past season.

When asked if they cut back on the amount they spent, and if they cut back on the number of gifts they bought a greater percentage of women cut back then men. When asked if they bought items on sale, shopped in less expensive stores and bought more practical or thrifty gifts again a higher percentage of women answered ?Yes.?

SEE CHART: Did you do any of the following during your holiday shopping?

?We had been seeing a decidedly frugal mindset in the female consumer in the earlier part of 2011,? said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst, The NPD Group, Inc., ?and based on these results it would appear that women have held to that through the holiday season?

How did men and women evaluate this year?s promotions compared to last year?s? The study?s results showed that both genders felt that this holiday season?s ?sales? were better than last year?s.

The majority (close to 40 percent) of both men and women told NPD that this year?s sales were much or a little better than last year?s. A little more than one third of men and women said that the ?sales? were about the same. Approximately 10 percent of both genders said the sales last year?s sales were much better.

?Sales played a huge role in holiday this year. Retailers used door-busters, special sales, discounts, and discounts on top of discounts to lure the consumer in and it worked,? said Cohen, ?But it also ?front loaded? holiday sales and that made holiday look good on the surface posting higher dollar volumes but ultimately it will challenge margins.?

Retailers looked for new ways to interact with consumers this holiday. NPD?s study asked consumers about their cell phone or smart phone usage during their holiday shopping. The most often cited reason that both men and women said they used their phones during the holiday season was to ?research a product.?

See Chart: In which of the following ways, if any, did you use your cellphone/smartphone during this holiday season?

?I think it is becoming clear that there is a growing market for this kind of consumer engagement,? said Cohen, ?While the 4 percent of consumers that told us they used smart phones to make a purchase doesn?t sound like a lot, remember it was less than a decade ago that only 3 percent of consumers told us they shopped online,? noted Cohen.

This year the item most often received as a gift was an apparel item with 49 percent. The second most often received item was a gift card. Thirty-four percent of men said they received a gift card and 42 percent of women said they did. The third most received item was an electronic item with approximately 20 percent of both men and women saying they received that as a gift.

?There just wasn?t a lot of new product out there this year, so people relied on the ?tried and true? to give as gifts,? said Cohen. ?In other non-apparel categories the items that were new or innovative, as a general rule, did very well.?

NPD studies conducted earlier in the season pointed to a lot of self-gifting activity during the early part of the holiday retail season. In this post-holiday study 50 percent of women told NPD they bought something for themselves during the course of their holiday shopping while 40 percent of men said they bought something for themselves.

?Women were the ones that told us they cut back on their spending, cut back on the number of people on their lists and in general were more thrifty in their gift shopping,? said Cohen, ?So they felt more comfortable about rewarding themselves for being so frugal and there were a lot deals that were hard to pass up.?

?As 2012 takes shape we should be on the lookout for more retailers to work with the triggers that compelled consumers to make a holiday purchase,? noted Cohen, ?Look for ?new traditions? like extended hours, weekend sales, double discounts and ?indulge yourself? pitches to entice consumers this year.?

Methodology: The NPD Group, Inc.?s post-holiday of consumer?s holiday buying behavior was fielded to a statistically representative sample of 2500 U.S. Adults, 18+ through NPD?s consumer panel. The study was fielded from December 27, 2011 to January 5, 2012.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 29, 2011

A digitally restored version of ?Santa Claus Conquers the Martians,? one of the most charming and campy of holiday motion pictures, is being re-released on a one-time-only basis to theaters across the United States and Canada this December, along with other classic holiday movie moments. The film, now it in all of colorful restored glory, has not been seen on the big screen since its initial release in 1964.

?Santa Claus Conquers the Martians? is the main feature of a delightfully retro compilation called SANTA’S COOL HOLIDAY FILM FESTIVAL, which features a family-friendly mix of vintage Technicolor Christmas cartoons, long-lost holiday greetings from 1960?s TV personalities like Shari Lewis & Lambchop and Ozzie & Harriet, a 1949 bouncing-ball sing-a-long to “Jingle Bells,” the beloved animated classic ?Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer,? and lots more holiday season fun.

Holland Releasing, distributor of digitally restored classics, originally planned a narrow release targeted to college-age audiences who know ?Santa Claus Conquers the Martians? well from its various TV spoofs on shows like ?Mystery Science Theater 3000? and ?Elvira’s Movie Macabre.? However, says Thomas W. Holland, founder of Holland Releasing, ?The film’s appeal quickly crossed over to mainstream theater chains such as Harkins, Rave and Landmark, who saw the program’s huge family and kid-appeal. The space-blazing color restoration of ?Santa Claus Conquers the Martians? and the other fun film bits included in SANTA?S COOL HOLIDAY FILM FESTIVAL big screen presentation are sure to bring holiday enjoyment to every generation, from grandparents to young children.?

To date, SANTA’S COOL HOLIDAY FILM FESTIVAL is scheduled to play in more than 200 theaters with others joining the line-up daily. A listing can be seen at the film’s official website: http://www.SantaMartiansMovie.com.

?Santa Claus Conquers the Martians? is a colorful mix of Christmas comedy and 1960?s sci-fi, resulting in an unexpectedly charming “kids eye view” of the holiday season. Filmed on a New York City soundstage in 1964, the cast was made up of top-notch Broadway and soap opera character actors, including John Call as Santa and Bill McCutcheon as an hilariously bumbling Martian. Even the child actors in the film were Broadway veterans and the film’s production had to be scheduled around their stage and school schedule. For trivia fans, ?Santa Claus Conquers the Martians? marked the film debut of 10 year-old Pia Zadora who, like all of the Martians, performed in varying degrees of green face make-up.

Besides the main feature, the other cool films in this cinematic Christmas stocking are amazing, if not occasionally breathtaking in their Technicolor glory. For instance, the producers have included two rarely seen cartoons from the legendary studios of Max Fleischer, who also gave us Popeye and Betty Boop — “Christmas Comes But Once A Year,” about a grand-fatherly inventor who visits an orphanage to pose as Santa Claus, and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” Fleischer’s animated treasure that tells the story of the little reindeer who guides Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve. The restoration of these gems was costly and time-consuming, but the pay off for the audience is getting to see them as they were originally meant to be enjoyed — on a huge theater screen.

And what’s a family movie experience without an old-time sing-a-long? Holland, also the producer and director of SANTA’S COOL HOLIDAY FILM FESTIVAL, searched around the world to locate a circa-1949 bouncing ball sing-a-long to ?Jingle Bells.?

“I knew this bit of film existed as I recalled seeing the sing-a-long ?Jingle Bells? cartoon on television–in black-and-white, of course–as a kid,” said Holland. “After discovering it was originally a segment in a vintage Technicolor cartoon, it took months to locate the only existing print. It even has extra lyrics that have been long forgotten. Holland added, ?Community-sings like this are sadly rare today, but in a movie theater environment, as opposed to television, they bring everyone together. It’s just one of many delightful highlights in the whole SANTA’S COOL HOLIDAY FILM FESTIVAL.”
